iPod G5 central button sunken, pad misaligned

It happened that the central button of my click wheel was sunken by about 0.5mm . This is ugly as every time I selected something I touched as well the wheel and so the selection was wrong.

What was the problem: The center button and wheel sensors have a small plastic bump who presses the switch on the main board. To protect the switch they glued a black rubber pad ontop the electric switch. However, the one in the center was slipped away. So the button pressed direct on the switch. Thats why he was sunken in as the pad did not lift him up any more.

And her after the fix:

To fix it you have to open the iPod and adjust the rubber pad of the center switch.

Follow the following video to open your iPod or search for “iPod Gen 5 Repair Video” on Youtube.

Create a self extracting package under Windows 7

Windows contains per default the program iexpress. This application allows you to create self extracting packages. It is located under C:\Windows\SysWOW64 on a windows 7 64bit OS.

1. First start the application and select the option to create a new self extracting file.
2. Now choose what you want the package to do. Extract and run a program , just extract or create compressed files
3. Give the package a title
4. Choose whether you want user interaction (confirmation)
5. Choose whether to show license information from a file.
6. Select the files that should be added to the package
7. Choose how the extracting process should be visible
8. Add a finishing message or not.
9. Now enter the package file name and location. The program creates two files. One .EXE and a text file with extension SED (Self extracting Directive) containing the information to edit the package without having to enter all information again (use at 1.)

Windows Image Restore Failed

Situation

I wanted to create a clone disk as desaster restore for my Netbook

Preparation

  1. I made a Windows Image Backup
  2. Then created a Restore CD with an external CD Drive.
  3. As I dont like to restore from CD, I copied the content of the Restore-CD to a bootable USB-Stick.

Create Clone with Error

  1. I connected my external USB-Disk containing the previous created Windows Image Backup,
  2. Then I installed a new disk into my eee Netbook
  3. Now I pluged my USB-Stick in, acting as Restore-CD .
  4. Booting from USB-stick was a matter of configuring boot priorities in System Setup.
  5. After selecting my keyboard layout the restore GUI opened
  6. Selecting a Systemimage Restore showed the just created Systemimage. Fine
  7. I selected the new installad disk and started the restore
  8. But now an Error claimed that the Partition can not be restored and ended the whole action.

Solution

Don’t connect your external USB disk at startup

  1. Add your new interal disk and plug in your USB-Stick acting as Recovery CD
  2. Setup your BIOS to boot from your USB-Stick
  3. Boot your Netbook from Recovery USB-Stick
  4. Select your keyboard layout and proceed until you have to select to restore an image
  5. NOW connect your external USB-Disk containing the Windows Image Backup
  6. Select the Image to restore
  7. And restore it…..
  8. Boot from you clone disk. Done

It looks like the restore program somehow mixes up the two disks if they are connected from beginning on.
